Surrounded by Ice

Greenland

On the west coast of Greenland, well north of the Arctic Circle, massive icebergs that have calved from the Greenland ice cap float in the Ilulissat Icefjord, making their way to Disko Bay. This image was made in mid-May just before midnight, at a time of year when the sun just glances the horizon, but never sets -- producing long hours of soft light, and wonderful reflections in the calm, frigid waters of the fjord.
