During the late summer in the rivers and creeks of the Katmai Peninsula in Alaska, salmon -- in large numbers -- swim upstream to their spawning grounds. This attracts the attention of brown bears as they feed almost incessantly to put on weight in preparation for hibernation during the winter ahead. Here, photographed from a cliff above, a lone brown (grizzly) bear on the hunt has almost endless choice as hundreds of brilliant red-colored sockeye salmon swim in a circle around him.
