Stormy Seas
Deception Island, Antarctic peninsula
Sunlight illuminates a stormy sea in the Antarctic peninsula around Deception Island. Deception Island is located in South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. As shown in the photo, the island is the caldera of an active volcano, which seriously damaged local scientific stations in the lates 1960's. The island was once an active whaling station. On this trip, we were unable to visit due to the stormy weather and high seas. Photo © copyright by Jim Waterbury.
